Lead Apron Management
Did you know...
... your lead apron can crack? Underneath the fabric, the sheets of core material can crack and split leaving you vulnerable to radiation.
Cracking usually happens if aprons aren’t stored correctly, but cracks can occur over time to the most immaculately cared for apron.
The Joint Commission recommends that aprons be inspected annually (Schumacher, 2014)
Check on Delivery
As soon as you receive your lead apron, you must screen it to ensure it is intact and offers full protection.
Although we take care to assess the core materials before they are constructed, we have no visualisation of internal air bubbles and cannot guarantee that the apron has not been damaged in transit on its way to your department. Your imaging department should be able to provide this service for you. Once tested, it is important to monitor the item in a tracking software such as our X-Ray track software -

If an artefact is seen, it is important to ensure it is visualised in the right way.
Often imaging algorithms will accentuate an imperfection to make it look a lot worse than it actually is. We have provided a guide.
Caring For Your Apron
STORAGE:
Don't fold, crease, drape or sit down on your garments.
We strongly recommend that aprons be hung on a heavy duty chrome hanger or equivalent, and not on a hook - Shop Here.
Hook and loop closures must be secured properly to avoid snagging or tearing of fabric.
Always store apron with hook and loop closed.
Failure to properly care for your apron may result in harm to the apron, as well as void its warranty.
CLEANING:
Keep your garment clean by wiping away stains as soon as possible, using cold water and mild detergent. Do not autoclave.
Rothband recommends that departments set up a documented, regular schedule of cleaning and disinfection of radiation protection garments to prevent any possibility of cross infection.
DISINFECTION:
Envirotech spray is an Antiviral and Antimicrobial cleaning agent approved for use on Rothband aprons. Alcohol based wipes can also be used and help eliminate surface organisms between regularly scheduled deep cleanings.
Avoid using petroleum-based cleaning solvents or solutions containing bleach.
Test for colorfastness in an inconspicuous area.
Do not machine wash or machine dry.
Regular Inspection
VISUAL INSPECTION
Please inspect your garment thoroughly upon receipt and at regular intervals. a quick overview to ensure the lead hasn't dropped in the garment and identify any potential sites were the garment has been snagged or punctured.
X-RAY INSPECTION
Ask your radiation protection officer to arrange for the garment to be screened. Most hospitals have a screening program. This will identify any cracks or tears in the lead.
